People fervently celebrate Akshaya Tritiya.

10-05-2024, Fri.

Today is a day of vibrant festivity across India. It’s Akshaya Tritiya, a day considered exceptionally auspicious by Hindus and Jains. The very name, Akshaya Tritiya, translates to “the imperishable third,” signifying the everlasting good luck and prosperity associated with this occasion.

One of the most captivating sights on Akshaya Tritiya is the throngs of devotees flocking to sacred rivers like the Sarayu. In Ayodhya, a city steeped in religious significance, the banks of the Sarayu come alive with a fervor unlike any other. Devotees, dressed in their finest attire, arrive with their families, eager to partake in the holy rituals.

The air hums with a collective sense of piety. Chanting of mantras and hymns fills the atmosphere, mixing with the joyous chatter of families. As the sun paints the sky in hues of orange and gold, devotees immerse themselves in the cool waters of the Sarayu. This ritualistic bath, known as a “snan,” is believed to cleanse not just the body but also the soul.

The belief is that on Akshaya Tritiya, the cosmic energy is at its most potent. Taking a dip in the holy river on this day is said to wash away sins and usher in a period of abundance and success. Many devotees carry small pots of the sacred water home, believing it will bring blessings to their families and households.

The festivities extend beyond the riverbanks. Homes are adorned with रंगोली (Rangoli), intricate patterns made from colored powders, and doorways are decorated with fresh mango leaves, a symbol of prosperity. Delicacies like मीठा पान (Meetha Paan), a sweet betel nut preparation, and खीर (Kheer), a creamy rice pudding, are shared amongst loved ones.

Akshaya Tritiya is more than just a religious occasion; it’s a vibrant tapestry woven with traditions, rituals, and a strong sense of community. As the day progresses, the fervor might lessen, but the blessings of Akshaya Tritiya, like its name suggests, are believed to be everlasting.
