Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have officially finalized their divorce after an extensive eight-year legal battle, marking the conclusion of one of Hollywood’s most publicized and contentious splits. The couple, who were married for two years and together for twelve, share six children. Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016, citing irreconcilable differences following an incident on a private plane where allegations of abuse surfaced against Pitt.
The divorce process has been fraught with complications, including custody disputes and disagreements over asset division. Legal experts noted that the drawn-out nature of the proceedings was not typical, attributing it to various factors such as the couple’s inability to reach consensus on key issues and the involvement of child welfare investigations. These investigations were initiated after allegations emerged regarding Pitt’s behavior towards the children during the flight incident. Although no charges were filed against him, the scrutiny significantly impacted the divorce timeline.
In 2019, a judge declared Jolie and Pitt legally single, yet unresolved matters related to custody and financial assets persisted. Their relationship continued to be tumultuous in court, with both parties filing motions that reflected their ongoing animosity. For instance, Pitt sought to seal court documents, which Jolie’s camp opposed, arguing it was an attempt to shield himself from public scrutiny rather than protecting their children’s privacy.Despite these challenges, both parties made efforts towards resolution. In 2022, they attempted mediation through a private judge; however, this was disrupted due to a conflict of interest involving the judge’s prior business dealings with Pitt’s legal team.
This setback further delayed the finalization of their divorce. On December 30, 2024, Jolie’s attorney confirmed that both parties had signed off on the settlement. James Simon stated that Jolie is relieved yet exhausted from the lengthy process. He emphasized that since filing for divorce, Jolie has focused on healing and finding peace for herself and their children. Although details of the settlement remain undisclosed and still require judicial approval, this agreement signifies a significant step forward in resolving their long-standing disputes.
As they move forward separately, both Jolie and Pitt continue to navigate co-parenting their six children amidst ongoing legal challenges related to shared business interests, including a multimillion-dollar winery in France that has also been a point of contention between them.
