In a surprising turn of events, President Donald Trump has announced the suspension of the previously planned 25% tariffs on Colombian goods, following an agreement reached with Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

This decision comes after a tumultuous exchange between the two leaders regarding the deportation of Colombian migrants from the United States.Initially, Trump had declared an emergency tariff on all Colombian imports on January 26, 2025, in response to Colombia's refusal to allow two U.S. military flights carrying deported migrants to land.

The tariffs were set to escalate to 50% within a week if Colombia did not comply with U.S. demands. Alongside the tariffs, Trump also imposed a travel ban on Colombian government officials and announced enhanced inspections for Colombian nationals and cargo entering the U.S., citing national security concerns.

However, following diplomatic negotiations, Colombia agreed to accept all deported migrants, including those arriving on U.S. military aircraft. In a statement released by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, it was confirmed that Colombia had agreed to "unrestricted acceptance" of these individuals without delay. As a result, Trump decided to hold the tariffs "in reserve" and not implement them as initially planned.
