Raghav Chadha has urged the removal of penalty charges imposed by banks for not maintaining minimum account balances.
Referring to data presented in the Lok Sabha, he highlighted that banks collected around ₹19,000 crore over the past three financial years
— including ₹8,000 crore from public sector banks and ₹11,000 crore from private banks.
Chadha argued that these penalties place an unfair burden on low-income individuals and daily wage earners, who often find it difficult to maintain the required minimum balance.
