Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the G7 Summit in Italy from June 13 to 15, 2024. This was his first overseas engagement after taking oath for a record third term in office. The summit, held at the luxurious Borgo Egnazia resort in Italy’s Apulia region, brought together leaders from the G7 nations, as well as several outreach countries, including India.

During his visit, PM Modi held one-on-one meetings with world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. He also addressed the outreach session of the summit, focusing on key areas such as artificial intelligence, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean region. In his departure statement, PM Modi expressed his gratitude for the invitation to attend the summit, highlighting the significance of the India-Italy strategic partnership and the importance of consolidating bilateral ties in the Indo-Pacific and Mediterranean regions. He emphasized the need to end the monopoly in technology, particularly in artificial intelligence, to lay the foundation for an inclusive society. The G7 Summit provided an opportunity for PM Modi to engage with world leaders on pressing global issues and to reinforce India’s commitment to international cooperation. His participation in the summit also underscored India’s growing role in global affairs, as the country has been invited to attend the summit as an outreach nation for the eleventh time.

 

After concluding his day-long visit to Italy, PM Modi departed for Delhi, marking the end of his first foreign visit in his third term as Prime Minister. The visit was seen as a significant step in reinforcing India’s diplomatic ties with key nations and in addressing global challenges through international cooperation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi held several bilateral meetings with world leaders at the G7 Summit in Italy. Key outcomes from these meetings include:

 

  1. Meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron:
    • Modi and Macron agreed to expand cooperation in artificial intelligence, critical and emerging technologies, energy, and sports.
    • They committed to working closely in preparation for the upcoming Artificial Intelligence Summit and United Nations Oceans Conference, both to be hosted in France in 2025.
  2. Meeting with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak:
    • Modi and Sunak discussed enhancing bilateral ties in trade, investment, and technology.
    • They reiterated their commitment to a strong and mutually beneficial partnership, with discussions including potential collaborations in healthcare, climate change, and education.
  3. Meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy:
    • Modi expressed India’s support for peace and stability in the region.
    • They discussed humanitarian aid and the importance of diplomatic solutions to conflicts.
    • Modi emphasized India’s willingness to contribute to rebuilding efforts and provide necessary support to Ukraine.
  4. Meeting with US President Joe Biden:
    • Biden acknowledged India, along with Brazil and Argentina, as critical partners in the global supply of minerals essential for clean energy technologies.
    • This recognition underscored India’s growing role in global energy initiatives.
  5. Meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida:
    • The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation in various sectors.
  6. Meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni:
    • Modi and Meloni held discussions on various issues, including the importance of Africa in global affairs and the need for international cooperation
