The Jammu and Kashmir Textile Sourcing Fair 2024 recently took place in Srinagar, marking a significant event aimed at promoting the region’s rich textile heritage and supporting local artisans. Organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Trade Promotion Organization (JKTPO) in collaboration with the Handloom Export Promotion Council (HEPC), the fair served as a platform for over 100 local sellers to showcase their handcrafted products.

The event attracted more than 60 national and international buyers, fostering connections that could enhance trade opportunities for regional craftspeople.Inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the fair emphasized the importance of preserving cultural legacies while boosting local economies through increased trade. Sinha highlighted that initiatives like this are crucial for empowering artisans and weavers, thereby improving the socio-economic landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. He noted that exports from the region have significantly increased this year, and a new export policy is expected to further bolster the sector’s growth.

The fair showcased a diverse array of products, including intricately woven shawls, exquisite Pashmina suits, captivating Basohli paintings, and masterful crewelwork. Each item reflects the artisanal dedication and skill inherent in Jammu and Kashmir’s textile traditions.

The event not only provided a marketplace for these goods but also facilitated discussions on business opportunities, with reports indicating that it secured around Rs 10.3 crore in confirmed orders and generated Rs 54 lakh in sample sales over its two-day duration.

Furthermore, the fair was designed to be more than just a one-time event; it aims to establish a recurring tradition that continually promotes business growth and export potential for local artisans. Officials from JKTPO expressed their commitment to creating an environment conducive to business development, which is essential for the economic prosperity of the region.

Overall, the J&K Textile Sourcing Fair 2024 stands as a testament to the region’s vibrant craftsmanship and its potential to thrive in global markets. By connecting local artisans with broader commercial networks, such initiatives play a pivotal role in ensuring that Jammu and Kashmir’s rich textile heritage is not only preserved but also celebrated on an international stage.
