Following the recent India-UAE Strategic Dialogue held on December 12, 2024, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The dialogue, co-chaired by Jaishankar and UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, focused on enhancing cooperation in various domains, including trade, investment, and regional security.
Jaishankar highlighted the “productive exchange on promising domains and key interests” during the discussions, emphasizing the commitment of both nations to strengthen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This partnership has evolved significantly since its inception, with both countries aiming to boost economic ties and address mutual security concerns. The dialogue included a review of existing agreements and exploration of new avenues for collaboration.
The meeting comes at a time when India and the UAE are experiencing robust economic growth and increasing bilateral trade, which reached approximately USD 85 billion in 2022-23. The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), signed in 2022, has further facilitated trade by reducing tariffs and enhancing market access across various sectors. Jaishankar noted that such agreements are crucial for fostering an open trade environment that benefits both countries.
In addition to economic discussions, the leaders addressed regional security issues, particularly developments in West Asia. Both Jaishankar and Al Nahyan reiterated their commitment to working together to promote peace and stability in the region. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also welcomed Al Nahyan’s visit, expressing hope that the partnership would reach “unprecedented heights” in the coming years.
The presence of a vibrant Indian community in the UAE, which numbers around 3.5 million, underscores the deep-rooted ties between the two nations. This community plays a vital role in strengthening cultural and economic connections, further enhancing bilateral relations.
In conclusion, the fourth India-UAE Strategic Dialogue marks a significant step towards deepening cooperation between two key players in the global arena. Jaishankar’s remarks about productive exchanges reflect a shared vision for mutual growth and prosperity, setting a positive tone for future collaborations in various sectors. As both countries navigate complex geopolitical landscapes, their partnership is poised to become increasingly influential on the world stage.
