A mother-son duo in Delhi has been detained for allegedly stealing valuable items, including gold jewelry, from the mother to fund the son’s extravagant gift for his girlfriend. The incident unfolded in southwest Delhi’s Najafgarh area, where a Class 9 student was identified as the primary suspect after his mother reported a theft at their home.
The situation came to light when the boy’s mother filed a complaint about missing gold jewelry, which included two gold chains, a pair of earrings, and a ring. The theft was reported to have occurred between 8 AM and 3 PM on August 2. Initially, the police were unable to find any evidence of forced entry or suspicious activity captured on CCTV footage around the time of the incident.
As investigations progressed, authorities shifted their focus to family members after ruling out external involvement. They discovered that the son had been missing since the theft and learned from friends that he had purchased a new iPhone worth approximately ₹50,000. This phone was intended as a birthday gift for his girlfriend.
Upon receiving a tip-off about the boy’s return home, police set up a trap and apprehended him shortly thereafter. During questioning, he initially denied involvement but later confessed to selling his mother’s gold jewelry to two different goldsmiths in Kakrola to finance the purchase of the phone. The police arrested one of the goldsmiths, identified as Kamal Verma, who was found in possession of some of the stolen items.
The motive behind this theft appears to be rooted in personal relationships; the boy sought to impress his girlfriend after being denied money by his mother for her birthday celebration. His mother had advised him to focus on his studies instead of pursuing material gifts. The boy’s actions reflect a troubling trend among youth where peer pressure and relationship dynamics lead to criminal behavior.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter, focusing on recovering all stolen property and ensuring proper legal proceedings against those involved. This incident highlights not only the challenges of youth behavior but also raises questions about familial dynamics and financial pressures within households.
