Before the England T20Is, Mohammed Shami begins practicing with Team India in Kolkata

20-Jan-2025, 12:30 PM

Mohammed Shami has officially resumed training with Team India at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata as they prepare for the upcoming T20I series against England, starting January 22, 2025. This marks a significant return for Shami, who has been sidelined for over a year due to an ankle injury that required surgery. His comeback is particularly timely as Jasprit Bumrah is unavailable for the series, positioning Shami to potentially lead the Indian bowling attack.

During his first practice session, Shami was seen with his left knee heavily strapped, a precautionary measure following his extensive rehabilitation. He began his training with a short run-up, gradually building up to full speed, showcasing his ability to hit the pitch hard and generate bounce. The session lasted over an hour, during which he engaged in discussions with bowling coach Morne Morkel to refine his technique and focus on specific lengths.

Shami’s last appearance in international cricket was during the ODI World Cup final in November 2023, where he excelled as India’s leading wicket-taker. Despite his impressive domestic performances in the Ranji Trophy and other tournaments since then, concerns about his fitness had delayed his return to the national squad.

However, selectors expressed optimism about his readiness for the T20Is and upcoming ODIs against England, as well as the Champions Trophy scheduled for February 19 in Karachi.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared glimpses of Shami’s training on social media, highlighting his determination and focus as he prepares to re-establish himself in the team. Shami has expressed gratitude for the support from fans and teammates, indicating that he is eager to make a significant contribution once again. His presence in the squad not only bolsters India’s pace attack but also brings invaluable experience at a crucial time.

As the team gears up for the T20I series, all eyes will be on Shami to see if he can maintain his form and fitness levels throughout the matches. His performance could play a pivotal role in India’s strategy against England and set the tone for subsequent international fixtures.
