The Indian short film “Anuja” is set to make its digital debut on February 5, 2025, on Netflix, just weeks before the 97th Academy Awards where it has been nominated for Best Live Action Short Film. This film, produced by prominent figures including Priyanka Chopra, Guneet Monga, and Mindy Kaling, has garnered significant attention and acclaim, marking a historic moment for Indian cinema at the Oscars.

 

The poignant story of “Anuja” centers on a nine-year-old girl named Anuja who has to decide between finishing school and working in a factory with her sister. This narrative explores themes of resilience, sisterhood, and hope, resonating deeply with audiences. The film stars Sajda Pathan and Ananya Shanbhag, and is directed by Adam J. Graves and Suchitra Mattai.

 

It is produced in collaboration with the Salaam Baalak Trust, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting street and working children. The film’s nomination is particularly noteworthy as it stands out among 180 contenders, securing its place among the top five films in its category. As the only Indian film nominated this year, “Anuja” highlights India’s growing presence in global cinema.
