ICC World Test Championship 2023–25: Recap of the league stage and final journey

The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-2025 is the third edition of the tournament, which started in June 2023 with the Ashes series between England and Australia and is scheduled to conclude in June 2025 with the final match.

Format and Points System

The tournament features 69 matches across 27 series, involving nine teams in the league stage. Each team plays six series, with three at home and three away, consisting of two to five Test matches each. The top two teams in the points table at the end of the league stage compete in the final. The points system remains consistent with the previous edition: 12 points for a win, 6 for a tie, 4 for a draw, and 0 for a loss. Teams are ranked based on the percentage of points won out of the total points contested.

League Stage Summary

The league stage of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-2025 recently concluded, with Australia defeating Sri Lanka.

Here’s how each team performed:

South Africa: Finished first with 69.44% of possible points. They won eight out of 12 matches and drew one, with strong home series wins against Pakistan and Sri Lanka and away victories over the West Indies and Bangladesh.

 

Australia: Finished second with 67.54% of possible points, earning the opportunity to defend their title. They drew the Ashes in England and dominated Pakistan at home. They also had victories over New Zealand and Sri Lanka and a home triumph against India.

 

India: Finished third with 50.00% of possible points, narrowly missing out on the final. They started with a series win in the West Indies and had home victories against England and Bangladesh. However, a home defeat against New Zealand and a challenging tour of Australia impacted their chances.

 

Sri Lanka: Finished sixth with 38.46% of possible points, winning five and losing eight matches. Their series victories came against Bangladesh and New Zealand.

 

Bangladesh: Finished seventh with 31.25% of possible points. They had series draws against New Zealand and the West Indies but struggled with heavy defeats to India, South Africa, and Sri Lanka.

 

West Indies: Finished eighth with 28.21% of possible points. They had series draws against Bangladesh, Australia, and Pakistan but faced heavy defeats against India, South Africa, and England.

Pakistan: Finished ninth with 27.98% of possible points. They had away defeats to Australia and South Africa and a home defeat by Bangladesh. They managed a series draw against the West Indies and a victory over England.

Finals

South Africa and Australia are set to compete in the final at Lord’s in June 2025.
