Sonal Dinusha Wins ICC Player of the Month After Remarkable India Test Series
Sri Lanka batter Sonal Dinusha has been named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for August 2026, earning the first monthly ICC award of his international career after an outstanding Test series against India.
The 25-year-old left-hander produced one of the most consistent batting performances of the series, scoring 420 runs across four innings at an average of 140. His remarkable run included three centuries and a half-century as Sri Lanka battled through a difficult two-match ICC World Test Championship series.
Dinusha entered the series with only three previous Test appearances, but his performances against India quickly placed him at the centre of Sri Lanka’s batting effort. He finished as the highest run-scorer across both teams and played a particularly important role in helping Sri Lanka secure a draw in the second Test.
The ICC award recognises a month in which Dinusha turned an opportunity against a strong opposition into an important early milestone in his international career.
Four Innings That Defined Dinusha's August
Dinusha’s numbers tell much of the story.
Across the two tests against India, his four innings produced scores of
100, 84, 103, and 133 are not out.
That gave him 420 runs for the series, with every inning producing at least 84 runs.
His first century came in the opening Test in Galle. Although Sri Lanka eventually suffered a 165-run defeat, Dinusha followed his hundred with another determined innings of 84.
The result left Sri Lanka needing a response in the second match.
Dinusha provided exactly that in Colombo.
He reached 103 in his first innings before producing an unbeaten 133 when Sri Lanka were attempting to prevent India from completing a series sweep. His resistance helped the hosts secure a draw, leaving India with a 1-0 series victory rather than a clean sweep.
Those performances also earned Dinusha the Player of the Match award in Colombo.
Twin Centuries Added a Rare Test Cricket Achievement
The Colombo Test did more than strengthen Dinusha’s case for the ICC award.
His centuries in both innings placed him in a rare group in Test cricket.
According to the ICC, Dinusha became only the third batter in Test history to score a century in each innings while playing for a team that had been asked to follow on.
That achievement came under difficult circumstances. Sri Lanka were trying to save the match, which meant Dinusha’s second-innings contribution carried importance beyond his individual score.
Instead of a short attacking innings, he needed to occupy the crease and help his side withstand India’s attempt to force a result.
His unbeaten 133 ultimately became one of the defining performances of the match.
Dinusha Beat Strong Competition for the Award
The ICC Men’s Player of the Month shortlist for August contained three players who had delivered significant performances in Test cricket.
Alongside Dinusha were England fast bowler Ollie Robinson and Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud.
Robinson had enjoyed an exceptional period against Pakistan, taking 16 wickets across two Tests at an average of 7.18.
Hasan, meanwhile, played an important role in Bangladesh’s historic Test victory over Australia in Darwin. He collected nine wickets in the two-match series, including figures of 6 for 55 and 3 for 56 in the victory that gave Bangladesh their first Test win on Australian soil.
Dinusha’s 420-run series against India ultimately earned him the monthly honour.
The competition also makes the award notable because the three nominees made their cases in very different ways: Dinusha through sustained batting, Robinson through repeated seam-bowling success, and Hasan through a landmark performance for Bangladesh.
A Major Milestone Early in His Test Career
Perhaps the most striking aspect of Dinusha’s award is how early it has arrived.
He had played only three Tests before the India series, according to the ICC. His performances during August therefore came while he was still establishing himself at international level.
Dinusha made his Test debut for Sri Lanka during the home series against Bangladesh in 2025.
His limited international experience made the consistency he showed against India particularly noteworthy. Rather than producing one standout innings, he crossed 80 in all four of his innings during the series.
By the end of August, he had converted three of those opportunities into centuries.
Receiving the ICC award after such a short period in international cricket gives Dinusha an early individual milestone, but his next challenge will be turning that successful series into sustained performances across future assignments.
Dinusha Reflects on a Memorable Series
After receiving the award, Dinusha described the recognition as particularly meaningful because it had arrived so early in his career.
He also highlighted the significance of scoring his centuries in Galle and Colombo in front of Sri Lankan supporters.
Although Sri Lanka were unable to win the series, Dinusha pointed to the team’s response in the second Test as an example of its determination after losing the opening match.
The batter said the recognition had given him additional motivation to continue improving and contributing to the national side.
For Dinusha, the award therefore represents more than his individual run tally. The Colombo Test in particular showed his ability to score while the team was under sustained pressure.
Why the India Series Was an Important Test
The two-match contest presented Dinusha with a significant opportunity.
India arrived as a demanding opponent, while Dinusha was still in the early stages of his Test career. His response was to become the leading scorer across both teams.
The sequence of 100, 84, 103 and 133 not out demonstrated consistency across different match situations rather than success in a single innings.
His first two contributions came despite Sri Lanka losing the opening Test.
The second match required something different. With the possibility of a 2-0 series defeat looming, Dinusha had to contribute to Sri Lanka’s attempt to stay in the contest.
His twin hundreds became central to that effort.
Sri Lanka still lost the series 1-0, but Dinusha emerged from it with a considerably stronger international profile than he had at the beginning of August.
August Award Highlights Test Cricket Performances
The men’s shortlist was notable because all three nominees were recognised primarily for performances in Test cricket.
Dinusha accumulated runs against India, Robinson took wickets against Pakistan, while Hasan helped Bangladesh record a historic victory in Australia.
That gave the August award a strong red-ball focus.
On the women’s side, Lucy Barnett of the Isle of Man won the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for August, becoming the first player from the Isle of Man to receive the honour. Her performances came during the Continental Cup T20I tournament.

A Breakthrough Month for Sonal Dinusha
August 2026 may ultimately be remembered as the month Sonal Dinusha established himself on the international stage.
Four substantial innings against India transformed what was still a very young Test career. His 420 runs made him the series’ leading scorer, his twin hundreds helped Sri Lanka rescue the Colombo Test, and his performances were recognised with his first ICC Men’s Player of the Month award.
The award does not determine what comes next in Dinusha’s career, but it gives him a significant early achievement to build on.
For Sri Lanka, his performances also provided an encouraging sign from a player who entered the India series with very limited Test experience.
After three centuries in four innings and an ICC award to follow, Dinusha’s next appearances for Sri Lanka will now come with considerably more attention.
