Anees Bazmee Recalls Iconic Welcome Dialogue of Mushtaq Khan
Filmmaker Anees Bazmee has recalled the story behind one of the most memorable moments from his 2007 comedy film Welcome, following the death of actor Mushtaq Khan. Bazmee revealed that the dialogue that later became closely associated with Khan was not part of the original script and was developed during the filming of the movie.
Mushtaq Khan, who appeared in several Hindi films and television projects during his career, played a supporting role in Welcome. His character was part of the group led by Uday Shetty and Majnu Bhai, played by Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor. Although his screen time was limited, one sequence became particularly memorable among audiences.
The actor died on September 24, 2026, at the age of 56. His death prompted tributes from colleagues and friends from the film industry, including Bazmee, who remembered their association while discussing how Khan’s role in Welcome eventually became an important part of the film’s comedy.
How Mushtaq Khan’s Welcome Role Took Shape
According to Bazmee’s account, Mushtaq Khan was not initially expected to have a major role in Welcome. The filmmaker told ANI that he had explained to Khan that he would largely remain in the background, standing behind the bodyguard.
Despite knowing that his role was small, Khan agreed to be part of the project.
Bazmee recalled that several days into filming, Khan pointed out that he still did not have any dialogue. The director then decided to create a separate sequence for him.
Rather than simply adding a short line, Bazmee said he spent time developing a portion specifically around Khan’s character. He also approached Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor, who were central to the sequence, and asked them to allow the new scene to work around Khan’s performance.
According to Bazmee, both actors agreed to the idea, allowing Khan to become the focus of the particular exchange.
That decision eventually produced the dialogue that audiences would remember long after the film’s release.
Khan’s character explains that one of his legs is artificial and that he had been a major hockey player. The unusual setup and the way Khan delivered the scene turned the moment into one of the film’s recognisable comic sequences.
Bazmee later recalled that Khan himself had spoken about the lasting impact of the dialogue. The actor reportedly told the filmmaker that people continued to recognise him for the line even after he had worked in numerous other films.
That anecdote offers an example of how a relatively small supporting role can sometimes become particularly memorable to audiences.
Why the Dialogue Became So Memorable
Welcome was released in 2007 and featured a large ensemble cast, including Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Paresh Rawal, Mallika Sherawat and Feroz Khan, alongside Mushtaq Khan and other supporting performers. Bazmee also shared a tribute after learning of Khan’s death, remembering him as a close associate from Welcome. The filmmaker described himself as shocked by the loss and remembered Khan’s personality and contribution to the film.
Actor Rajpal Yadav also remembered his recent meeting with Khan and spoke about their final interaction before his death.
Khan’s career extended well beyond Welcome. He appeared in numerous films and television projects and frequently worked in supporting roles. His filmography included appearances in movies such as Gadar: Ek Prem Katha and Stree 2, among others.
His death has brought renewed attention to some of his most recognisable performances, particularly the role in Welcome that introduced his work to a wide audience through one of the film’s memorable comic exchanges.
Bazmee’s latest recollection provides additional context about how that scene came together.
