The Boxing Day Test between India and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in 2024 has etched its name in history by breaking an 87-year-old attendance record. Over the course of the five-day match, more than 350,700 fans attended, surpassing the previous record of 350,534 set during the 1936-37 Ashes series against England, which was famously played over six days and featured cricket legend Sir Donald Bradman.

The record-breaking turnout was confirmed by Cricket Australia on December 30, 2024, as the final day of the match unfolded. The MCG experienced remarkable attendance figures throughout the Test, with day one attracting 87,242 spectators, day two drawing 85,147, and day three seeing 83,073 fans. Even on day four, which typically sees a decline in attendance, 43,867 fans filled the stands.

The excitement peaked on the fifth day when 51,371 spectators entered during the first session alone, pushing the cumulative total past the historic mark.

This unprecedented crowd not only marked a significant milestone for Australian cricket but also highlighted the immense popularity of Test cricket in India. Indian fans played a crucial role in creating a lively and vibrant atmosphere at the MCG, underscoring the strong following of cricket in India and its cultural significance.MCG officials were taken aback by the overwhelming turnout, particularly on day five. The Melbourne Cricket Club had to open additional parking facilities to accommodate the influx of fans, an unusual step reflecting their underestimation of expected attendance. Stuart Fox, CEO of the Melbourne Cricket Club, expressed his astonishment at witnessing such a massive crowd for a Test match.

The Boxing Day Test has traditionally been a major event in Australia’s cricket calendar, but this year’s match took on added significance as it broke records and showcased the growing enthusiasm for cricket among fans from both nations. The event also served as a reminder of cricket’s enduring appeal and its ability to unite fans across borders.

In summary, the 2024 Boxing Day Test between India and Australia not only shattered attendance records but also reaffirmed cricket’s position as a beloved sport that continues to draw large crowds and passionate support from fans worldwide.
