Regarding the AAP Chief’s assertion regarding DDA, the Delhi LG claims that Kejriwal is purposefully lying and misleading people

13-Jan-2025, 02:23 PM

The ongoing political clash between Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has intensified following Kejriwal’s allegations regarding land use changes in the Shakur Basti slum area. During a recent visit to Shakur Basti, Kejriwal accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of “tendering” the land and claimed that the LG had altered regulations to facilitate this process. In response, LG Saxena vehemently refuted these claims, labeling them as “a complete lie” and asserting that Kejriwal is deliberately misleading the public.

Details of the Dispute

The conflict centers around a proposal discussed in a Delhi Development Authority (DDA) meeting held on December 20, 2024, regarding a change in land use for approximately 4.63 hectares of railway land in Shakur Basti. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has cited this meeting as evidence that the land’s designation is shifting from “Transportation” to “Residential.” They argue that this change contradicts Saxena’s claims that no alterations have been made.

In his defense, LG Saxena stated that the DDA has neither changed the land use nor issued any eviction or demolition notices for the Shakur Basti area. He emphasized that Kejriwal’s statements were not only inaccurate but also potentially damaging, as they misrepresent the facts surrounding the situation.

AAP’s Counterarguments

In response to Saxena’s accusations, AAP officials highlighted documents from the DDA meeting to substantiate their claims. They argue that these documents clearly indicate an approved change in land use, which they believe exposes the LG’s assertions as false. AAP spokespersons have demanded an apology from Saxena for what they describe as misleading statements.

Political Context

This dispute comes at a politically sensitive time, with Delhi elections approaching. Both parties are keen to sway voters, particularly in urban slum areas like Shakur Basti, which are critical for electoral success. The AAP is attempting to position itself as a defender of slum dwellers against perceived encroachments by the central government and its affiliates.

Conclusion

As tensions escalate between Kejriwal and Saxena, the Shakur Basti issue reflects broader themes of governance and accountability in Delhi. The exchange of accusations not only highlights the contentious relationship between the AAP-led state government and the centrally appointed LG but also underscores the importance of transparency and public trust in urban development issues. With both sides entrenched in their positions, it remains to be seen how this political drama will unfold in the lead-up to the elections.
