Two Bangladeshi nationals are detained by police

31-Jan-2025, 10:48 AM

Mumbai police recently detained two Bangladeshi nationals for unlawfully residing in the city. This arrest is part of a broader crackdown on illegal immigration, which has intensified following high-profile incidents involving foreign nationals. The two individuals were apprehended in Versova, a locality in Mumbai, and were unable to provide valid documentation to justify their stay in India.

This operation is part of a special initiative by the Maharashtra police aimed at addressing the increasing number of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. In January 2025 alone, the police reported that over 160 Bangladeshi nationals were detained as part of this ongoing effort. The authorities have established teams across all 93 police stations to specifically target illegal immigrants, with daily operations focusing on slum areas where such individuals are often found.

The surge in arrests is also linked to recent violent incidents involving Bangladeshi nationals, including a notable case where one was charged with stabbing a celebrity. This incident has prompted law enforcement to prioritize the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants more aggressively. The police have recorded an average of six to seven cases of illegal immigration daily since the beginning of the year, indicating a significant increase in enforcement activity compared to previous years.

In addition to these arrests, the legal process surrounding deportation cases has become more streamlined. Courts are now hearing cases more frequently, with judges like Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Kanchan Zanwar overseeing proceedings that often result in convictions for illegal entry and residency. These cases are processed under the Foreigners Act, and many accused individuals attempt to contest their status by presenting various forms of identification, although courts have increasingly recognized these documents as insufficient proof of citizenship.

As the Mumbai police continue their crackdown on illegal immigration, they emphasize the importance of compliance with legal protocols and the need for robust investigations into each case. The recent arrests highlight not only the challenges posed by illegal immigration but also the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address these issues within the framework of Indian law
