External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar is set to travel to Sri Lanka on June 20, 2024, in his first bilateral visit after the formation of the new National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in India.

The visit is aimed at reaffirming India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy and underlines India’s continued commitment to Sri Lanka as its closest maritime neighbor and time-tested friend. During the visit, Jaishankar is expected to meet with the Sri Lankan leadership, including President Ranil Wickremesinghe and other political leaders. The discussions will focus on reviewing the implementation of various India-backed development projects and initiatives for economic, energy, and physical connectivity between the two countries. This includes projects such as the proposed industrial zone in Trincomalee, which the Indian government plans to establish to attract Indian and foreign investors. The visit also assumes significance as Sri Lanka is expected to hold its presidential election later this year, and Jaishankar’s meetings with the leadership will be an opportunity to discuss the political situation in the country. Issues such as the swift resumption of development projects initiated with Indian investments, which had been halted midway, are also expected to be discussed. Additionally, the matter of fishermen from both countries being detained for transgressing the maritime boundary is likely to come up during the discussions.

Jaishankar is also expected to meet with leaders representing various Tamil political parties in Sri Lanka. The visit is seen as an important step in strengthening India’s ties with Sri Lanka, its closest maritime neighbor. It underscores India’s commitment to its “Neighbourhood First” policy and its desire to play a constructive role in the region.

The discussions are expected to cover a wide range of bilateral issues, including economic cooperation, development projects, and regional security, as India and Sri Lanka work to deepen their partnership.
