Rescue Efforts Continue in Wayanad After Devastating Landslides. It has been nine days since massive landslides struck the hilly areas of Wayanad in Kerala, claiming the lives of at least 146 people and leaving hundreds injured. The rescue operations, led by the Indian Army, NDRF, and various state agencies, have been ongoing tirelessly to locate and aid those affected by the disaster.
Challenges and Progress
The rescue efforts have been hampered by continuous heavy rainfall and unstable terrain in the affected areas. However, the teams have made significant progress in their search for survivors and recovery of bodies. As of August 8th, 2024, the death toll has reached 146, with 128 people receiving treatment for injuries in various hospitals. Authorities have established 45 relief camps in Wayanad alone, accommodating over 3,000 displaced individuals.
Coordination and Resources
The Indian Army has been working in close coordination with the NDRF, state police, and fire force to carry out the rescue operations. Four columns from the DSC Centre in Kannur and the 122 TA Battalion from Kozhikode, comprising approximately 225 personnel, have been deployed to the site. Additional resources, including bridging stores and earth-moving equipment, have been airlifted from the Hindon Air Force Station in Uttar Pradesh to aid in the rescue efforts. Helicopter reconnaissance has been undertaken to assess the damage and channel the rescue operations effectively.

The bodies of the deceased are being transported to makeshift mortuaries for identification and autopsy. As of August 8th, 94 bodies have been brought to the mortuary in Meppadi, with an additional 32 bodies and 25 body parts expected from Nelamboor. Ongoing Challenges and Support
Despite the progress made in the rescue efforts, the teams continue to face challenges due to the ongoing heavy rainfall and the need for additional resources. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured the Kerala government of all possible assistance from the Centre, and the state has received support from various quarters. As the rescue operations enter their ninth day, the people of Wayanad and Kerala remain resilient in the face of adversity. The state government and various agencies are working tirelessly to provide relief and support to the affected communities, while the nation stands in solidarity with those impacted by this devastating natural disaster.
