Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) on January 17, 2024, commemorating the 107th anniversary of the AIADMK founder’s birth. MGR, a celebrated figure in Tamil cinema and politics, founded the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in 1972 after a fallout with the DMK leadership.
Modi described MGR as a “true icon of Tamil cinema and a visionary leader,” highlighting his contributions to social justice and the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu.
In his tribute posted on X (formerly Twitter), Modi emphasized MGR’s enduring impact on Tamil Nadu’s development, stating, “His films, particularly those on social justice and empathy, won hearts beyond the silver screen”.
The Prime Minister acknowledged MGR’s tireless efforts as Chief Minister from 1977 until his death in 1987, which significantly shaped the state’s growth trajectory. Modi’s remarks resonate with MGR’s legacy as a leader who prioritized the welfare of the marginalized and worked towards societal upliftment.
The tribute was part of broader commemorative activities across Tamil Nadu. State Cabinet ministers and local officials also paid floral tributes at MGR’s statue at the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University in Guindy, reflecting his lasting influence in the region.
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami echoed these sentiments, urging party cadres to honor MGR’s legacy by engaging with the public and addressing governance issues under the current DMK administration. He expressed confidence that the AIADMK would regain power in future elections, emphasizing a commitment to MGR’s principles of welfare and justice for all.
MGR’s journey from a film star to a political titan is remarkable; he utilized his cinematic fame to build a substantial political base, advocating for social reforms through his films and public policies. His legacy continues to inspire many in Tamil Nadu, where he is remembered not only as a beloved actor but also as a transformative leader who reshaped the political landscape of the state.
