Tensions in Manipur have escalated significantly, leading to a series of arrests by the police in response to recent incidents of vandalism and arson. As of now, a total of 32 individuals have been apprehended, including 7 additional arrests linked specifically to fire-related crimes and property destruction.
The unrest began following violent protests triggered by the abduction and killing of six Meitei women and minors in Jiribam on November 11, allegedly by unidentified Kuki groups. In retaliation, mobs targeted the homes of political figures, resulting in widespread vandalism. On November 17, police reported the arrest of 23 individuals involved in these acts across various districts, including Imphal East, Imphal West, and Bishnupur. During these operations, authorities recovered a .32 caliber pistol, ammunition, and several mobile phones from the suspects135.
Subsequent to these initial arrests, the situation prompted further police action. On November 22, law enforcement announced the arrest of 7 more individuals directly connected to the ongoing violence and property damage. This brings the total number of arrests related to these disturbances to 323. The police have indicated that their operations are ongoing as they continue to investigate the incidents and gather evidence.
The unrest has not only led to significant property damage but has also resulted in injuries among civilians; reports indicate that eight people were injured during efforts to disperse violent crowds15. In addition to the arrests, security measures have been heightened in the region. The Indian Army and Assam Rifles have been deployed to maintain order, and curfews along with internet shutdowns have been enforced in several areas to prevent further escalation of violence14.
This situation remains fluid as authorities work to restore peace and order in Manipur. The community is on edge as tensions persist, with ongoing investigations into both the violence against political figures and the tragic events that sparked these protests. The police are expected to continue their crackdown on those involved in the unrest as they aim to prevent any recurrence of violence.
