A tragic incident involving Swiss International Air Lines has resulted in the death of a cabin crew member following an emergency landing caused by smoke in the aircraft. The event occurred on December 23, 2024, when an Airbus A220-300, operating flight LX1885 from Bucharest to Zurich, was forced to land in Graz, Austria, due to engine issues that led to smoke filling the cockpit and cabin.
Upon landing, emergency services were activated, and one crew member was transported by helicopter to a local hospital for intensive care. Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, this crew member succumbed to their injuries on December 30. Swiss Air CEO Jens Fehlinger stated, “We must report, with the deepest of sorrow and regret, that our young colleague died in the hospital in Graz.” He conveyed his sincere condolences to the relatives of the deceased, emphasizing the profound sorrow experienced by the airline industry.
The incident also affected other individuals on board. Twelve passengers received medical attention due to smoke inhalation and other related issues but were later discharged from the hospital. Another crew member also required hospitalization but has since been released.
In light of this tragedy, Swiss Airlines has initiated an investigation focusing on the aircraft’s mechanical components, particularly the engine. The airline is also reviewing the use of protective breathing equipment by cabin crew during emergencies. COO Oliver Buchhofer conveyed his distress over the incident, stating, “This is the saddest of days for us all. Losing our colleague and fellow member of our Swiss team leaves me distraught and dismayed.”
The local public prosecutor’s office in Graz has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the emergency landing and subsequent death of the crew member. The airline is committed to cooperating fully with authorities to determine the cause of the incident and ensure such tragedies are prevented in the future.
