The Exposition of the Sacred Relics of St. Francis Xavier begins today, November 21, 2024, and will continue until January 5, 2025. This significant event occurs every ten years in Goa, attracting pilgrims and tourists from around the globe to venerate the relics of St. Francis Xavier, a prominent Spanish Jesuit missionary and co-founder of the Society of Jesus. Known as “Goencho Saib” (Lord of Goa), he is revered for his extensive missionary work throughout Asia and is celebrated as the patron saint of missionaries.

During this 45-day exposition, the incorruptible remains of St. Francis Xavier will be displayed for public veneration at the Sé Cathedral in Old Goa. The event will commence with a private ceremony where a four-century-old silver glass casket containing the saint’s relics will be lowered from its resting place in the Basilica of Bom Jesus. Following this, a ceremonial procession will transport the relics approximately 300 meters to the cathedral, where they will remain accessible for worship and reflection by devotees12.

The exposition is not only a time for spiritual reflection but also includes various religious ceremonies such as Masses, prayer services, novenas, and processions. It serves as an opportunity for communal devotion and celebration among the faithful, particularly within the Catholic community12. The event is expected to draw around 8 million visitors over its duration, showcasing its immense significance both locally and internationally7.

St. Francis Xavier’s body has been preserved remarkably since his death in 1552, which has led many to regard his relics as miraculous. The tradition of public exposition began shortly after his canonization in 1622 and has evolved into this decennial event that highlights Goa’s rich cultural and religious heritage123.

In addition to the veneration of relics, various cultural activities are planned during this exposition, including an art exhibition featuring works from prominent artists across India. A souvenir book detailing the life of St. Francis Xavier will also be released26.

As pilgrims gather to honor St. Francis Xavier, this event stands as a testament to his enduring legacy and the deep spiritual connections fostered through centuries of devotion in Goa.
