UP: After a violent stone-pelting incident, the Sambhal market reopened

26-Nov-2024, 12:51 PM

Tensions in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, have begun to ease following a violent incident on November 24, which resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. The market in the area reopened on November 26 after being closed due to the unrest sparked by protests against a court-ordered survey of the Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid. This survey was intended to assess the mosque’s condition but led to significant backlash from local groups, culminating in clashes with police and stone-pelting incidents123.

The violence resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals, with several others injured. Among those named in the First Information Reports (FIRs) filed by authorities are prominent local politicians, including Ziaur Rahman Barq, a Member of Parliament from the Samajwadi Party, and Sohail Iqbal, the son of a local MLA. They are accused of inciting the violence that unfolded during the protests147. The police have arrested approximately 25 individuals in connection with these events, and additional security measures have been implemented to maintain order in the city13.

In response to the unrest, educational institutions remained closed initially as a precautionary measure, although reports indicate that schools have since reopened while internet services continue to be suspended to prevent further escalation of tensions46. Local authorities have increased police presence around sensitive areas, particularly near the Shahi Jama Masjid, and have restricted access for political leaders and activists to avoid inflaming the situation further15.

Despite the reopening of markets and a gradual return to normalcy, the atmosphere in Sambhal remains charged. The district magistrate has stated that while there are no outright restrictions on political leaders visiting affected areas, they must seek prior approval and limit their entourage to ensure safety14. The situation is being closely monitored by law enforcement agencies, which are employing various strategies including drone surveillance and flag marches to maintain peace56.

The events in Sambhal highlight ongoing tensions surrounding religious sites in India and underscore the delicate balance authorities must maintain between public order and community sentiments. As investigations continue into the violence and its causes, local leaders are calling for calm and dialogue among community members to prevent future incidents.
