The Indian Navy’s hydrographic survey ship, INS Sarvekshak, has successfully completed the first stage of its collaborative hydrographic survey in Mauritius. This significant milestone was achieved on January 15, 2025, following the ship’s arrival at Port Louis on December 26, 2024. The survey aims to enhance navigational safety and support maritime infrastructure development in Mauritian waters.
Upon its arrival, INS Sarvekshak engaged in a series of preparatory activities, including a joint coordination meeting with officials from the Mauritian government and relevant stakeholders. This meeting involved representatives from the Ministry of Housing and Lands, the Mauritius Hydrographic Service, and the Oceanographic Institute, focusing on the operational aspects of the hydrographic survey. The collaboration is part of a broader initiative to strengthen maritime ties between India and Mauritius, reflecting India’s commitment to regional cooperation under its SAGAR (Security And Growth for All in the Region) vision.
The first phase of the survey involved comprehensive data collection and mapping of key maritime areas, including the Le Morne region and parts of Rodrigues Island. INS Sarvekshak is equipped with advanced hydrographic survey technology, such as deep-sea multi-beam echo sounders and side-scan sonars, which facilitate precise underwater mapping. The ship also features an integral Chetak helicopter that supports aerial surveys and enhances operational efficiency.
In addition to conducting the survey, INS Sarvekshak has been involved in training sessions for Mauritian Coast Guard personnel. These sessions are designed to enhance local capabilities in hydrography and maritime operations, fostering knowledge exchange between Indian Navy experts and Mauritian officials. The training initiatives are crucial for building sustainable maritime expertise within Mauritius.
The completion of this first stage marks a significant step forward in enhancing navigational safety in Mauritian waters. It also sets the stage for further phases of the survey, which will contribute to better resource management and coastal development planning for the island nation.
This collaborative effort underscores the strong maritime partnership between India and Mauritius, emphasizing mutual interests in ensuring security and growth in the Indian Ocean region. As both nations continue to work together on this project, it is expected to yield long-term benefits for maritime safety and environmental stewardship in Mauritius.
